 
 インドからマレーシアにかけてが原産です。わが国には江戸時代に
渡来し、和名では「はなしゅくしゃ（花縮紗）」と呼ばれています。高さ
は０．８〜３メートルになり、長楕円形の葉が２列に並びます。短日植
物で、８月から９月ごろ、夕方になると香り豊かな白い花を咲かせま
す。３個の花弁のように見えるのは仮雄蘂です。耐寒性が強く、暖地
では戸外で越冬できます。種間交雑によって多くの園芸品種が作出
されています。
ショウガ科シュクシャ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Hedychium
coronarium。英名は Ginger lily。
Ginger lily (Hedychium coronarium) belongs to the Zingiberaceae (the
Ginger family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native from India to
Malaysia. It was introduced into Japan in Edo Era (250 years ago). This
herb can reach 0.8-3 m in height. The leaves are oblong and arranged in
double rows. It is a short day plant and the fragrant, white flowers bloom in
the early evening from August to September. The corolla has three petaloid
staminodia. It is hardy and can pass the winter outdoors in warm-
temperature region of Japan. The many interspecific hybrids have been
raised.
