コンニャク属は東南アジアに130種ほどが分布しています。そのうち蒟蒻の原料としては、マンナンを含んでいることが必須条件で、わが国で栽培されている「こんにゃく(Amorphophallus rivieri)」とともに、本種も原料となります。インドネシアのジャワ島に自生していて、葉の上に小さな珠芽(むかご)をつくって繁殖します。 
サトイモ科コンニャク属の多年草で、学名は Amorphophallus oncophyllus。英名はありません。 
Amorphophallus oncophyllus belongs to Araceae (the Arum Family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Jave Island in Indonesia. This herb reproduces itself by the propagules which are borne on the leaves. Amorphophallus genus is distributed about 130 species in Southeast Asia. Several species of them contains mannan in the corms and are used for the raw material of "Konjac food". This species contains mannan.
