わが国の本州、中部地方と北海道それに周極地方に分布しています。高山帯の湿った砂礫地に生え、高さは１５〜３０センチになります。葉は腎形で、長い葉柄があります。７月から８月ごろ、花茎を伸ばして直立した花序をだし、小さな緑色の花をまとまって咲かせます。果実は小さな堅果で広い翼があり、赤色に熟します。葉には酸味があってビタミンＣに富み、サラダに利用されます。別名で「まるばぎしぎし（丸葉羊蹄）」とも呼ばれます。

タデ科ジンヨウスイバ属の多年草で、学名は Oxyria digyna。英名は Mountain sorrel、Alpine sorrel。

The Mountain sorrel belongs to Polygonaceae (the Knotweed family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in Chubu district of Honshu, Hokkaido in Japan and the circumpolar. This herb grows in alpine damp gravels and can reach 15-30 cm in height. The leaves are kidney-shaped with long petioles. The upright clusteres are borne on the stalks and bloom small grouped flowers. The fruits are small nuts with broad wings, and ripen red. The leaves have a acidic taste and are rich in vitamin C, and can be used in salads.
