中国南部からインドシナ半島が原産です。潅木帯や常緑広葉樹林に生え、高さは５〜１５メートルになります。葉は楕円形から狭楕円形で革質です。５月から６月ごろ、花序をだし、５０〜７０個の小さな花を咲かせます。花序は白い苞葉に取り囲まれています。果実は集合果で、１１月から１２月に黄色や赤色に熟します。写真は、実生選抜品種の「げっこう（月光）」。

ミズキ科ヤマボウシ属の常緑高木で、学名は Benthamidia hongkongensis (syn. Cornus hongkongensis)。英名はありません。

The Benthamidia hongkongensis belongs to Cornaceae (the Dogwood family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to southrn China and the Indo-China Peninsula. This tree grows in thickets or broad-leaved evergreen forests and can reach 5-15 m in height. The leaves are elliptic to narrowly elliptic and leathery. The inflorescences are borne and bloom 50-70 small flowers from May to June. They are crowded round with white bracts. The fruits are compound and ripen yellow or red from November to December. The photos are a cutivar 'Gekkou' which is a selected variety by rasing from seed.
