南アフリカのケープ地方東部から南部に分布しています。乾燥した地域に生える多肉植物で、茎は直立し、棘はありません。夏、直径１０〜１２センチほどの星形の花を咲かせます。花は黄土色でえび茶色の剛毛が密生し、腐敗臭があります。怪我をした動物の傷口に似た雰囲気があり、ハエなどを誘う虫媒花です。

ガガイモ科スタペリア属の常緑多年草で、学名は Stapelia hirsuta。英名は Carrion plant。

Carrion plant (Stapelia hirsuta) belongs to Asclepiadaceae (the Milkweed family). It is an evergreen herb that is distributed in the south and eastern Cape region of South Africa. This herb is succulent and grows in dry areas. The stem stands upright and has no spines. Star shaped flower of 10-12 cm in diameter will bloom in summer. The flowers are yellow ocher and densely covered with reddish brown bristles, and have foul odor. This flower has an atmosphere resembling the wound of an injured animal. This is an entomophilous flower that invites flies etc.
