朝鮮半島から中国東北部・北部、それにシベリアに分布しています。高さは2〜3メートルになり、赤くて細い茎がこんもりした茂みをつくります。茎は冬の間はさらに鮮やかな赤色にたります。葉は卵形で対生し、秋には濃赤色に紅葉します。5月から7月ごろ、枝先に集散花序をだし、淡い黄白色の花を咲かせます。果実は核果で、秋に白色に熟します。
ミズキ科ミズキ属の落葉低木で、学名は Swida alba var. sibirica (syn. Cornus alba var. sibirica)。英名は Siberian dogwood。
The Siberian dogwood (Swida alba var. sibirica) belongs to Cornaceae (the Dogwood family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native to the Korean Penninsula, noth-eastern and northern China and Siberia. This tree can reach 2-3 m in height and produces a dense thicket of slender red stems. The stems turn brighter crimson during the winter. The leaves are ovate, opposite and turn dark red in fall. The cymes are borne at the terminal branches and bloom pale cream flowers from May to July. The fruits are drupes and ripen in white in fall.
