 中央アメリカが原産です。わが国へは江戸時代のはじめに沖縄へ
渡来しました。土壌を選ばず栽培が容易なことから、江戸時代の中
頃には全国的に広がりました。現在、世界の生産量の９０パーセント
はアジアが占めています。もともと熱帯性の植物なので、本州ではほ
とんど花を見ることができません。熱帯や亜熱帯地方では、秋のはじ
めに「あさがお」より小さな淡い紫色の花を咲かせます。別名で「かん
しょ（甘藷）」とも呼ばれます。写真中８・中９は、九州農業試験場にお
いて作出された園芸品種の「花らんまん（cv. Hana-ranman）」。葉が心
形、花冠が漏斗形から５角形で、淡紅色に咽部が紫赤色というのが
特徴です。写真下は、園芸品種の「スイートキャロライン（cv. Sweet
Caroline）」。
ヒルガオ科サツマイモ属の多年草で、学名は Ipomoea batatas。
英名は Sweet potato。
Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) belongs to Convolvulaceae (the Bindweed
family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Central America. It was
introduced into Japan in the early Edo period (about 350 years ago). It
became widespread all over the country in the middle of Edo period (about
250 years ago) by reason of easy to cultivate. Asia is a leading producer of
sweet potato and accounts for over 90 % of the production. In early fall,
the pale purple flowers which smaller than morning glory appear in the
tropics and sub-tropics. The 9th-10th photos are a cultivar "Hana-ranman"
and the bottom photo is a cultivar "Sweet Caroline".
