The Scarlet oak (Quercus coccinea) belongs to Fagaceae (the Beech family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is distributed in the eastern United States, from southwestern Maine to northeastern Mississippi. This tree grows on the ridges and slopes of the plateau and can reach 18 to 24 m in height. The bark is grayish brown with smooth streaks in young trees, and darkens and irregular cracks in mature trees. The leaves are ovate and split 7-9 deeply. The front side is glossy green and the back side is pale yellowish green. The leaves turn vermilion in fall. Inconspicuous flowers bloom in spring, and the nuts (acorns) of about 1.5 to 2.5 cm ripen in the fall of the second year.
