ヨーロッパおよびアジアの一部に分布しています。海岸沿いの草地や川岸、広葉樹の林にどに生え、高さは８０〜１５０センチになります。葉は奇数羽状複葉で、６〜１１対の側小葉と頂小葉がつきます。６月から７月ごろ、散形状集散花序に、甘い香りのするピンク色または白色の花を咲かせます。花の抽出物は、１６世紀には香水として利用されていました。

オミナエシ科カノコソウ属の多年草で、学名は Valeriana officinalis。英名は Valerian。

The Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) belongs to Valerianaceae (the Valerian family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Europe and parts of Asia. This herb grows in shore meadows, river banks, or broad-leaved forests, and it can reach 80-150 cm in height. The leaves are impari-pinnate compound with 6-11 pairs and terminal leaflet. The sweetly scented pink or white flowers bloom in an umbellate compound cyme from June to July. Valerian flower extracts were used as a perfume in the 16th century.
