ヨーロッパ北部から中央アジアが原産だと考えられています。わが国でも本州の関東地方以西に帰化しています。「あぶらな（Brassica campestris）」と「くろがらし（Brassica nigra）」との種間交雑種です。荒れ地や河川敷などに生え、高さは２５〜７５センチになります。葉は楕円形で、羽状に分裂し鋸歯があります。基部で茎を抱かないのが特徴です。４月から５月ごろ、黄色い扁平な十字形花を咲かせます。種子は香辛料「芥子（からし）」の原料となります。

The brown mustard (Brassica juncea) belongs to Brassiaceae (the Mustard family). It is a biennia herb that is native from northern Europe to Central Asia. It is naturalized in Japan, westward from Kanto district of Honshu. It is aninterspecific hybrid between Wild turnip (Brassica campestris) and Black mustard (Brassica nigra). This herb grows in disturbed areas or dry riverbeds and can reach 25-75 cm in height. The leaves are elliptic and divided into pinnate lobes with toothed edges. They are defined by un-enfolding stems. The yellow flat cruciate flowers come in April to May. The seeds are used as a raw material of mustard.
