わが国の本州から四国・九州、それに朝鮮半島や中国南部に分布しています。広葉樹林帯の南側斜面の樹上や岸壁に着生し、高さは２０センチほどになります。多数の茎が叢生します。５月から６月ごろ、白い可憐な花を咲かせます。江戸時代から「ちょうせいらん（長生蘭）」とも呼ばれ、栽培されてきました。

ラン科セッコク属の常緑多年草で、学名は Dendrobium moniliforme。英名は Mohl's dendrobium。

The Mohl's dendrobium (Dendrobium moniliforme) belongs to Orchidaceae (the Orchid family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed from Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula and southern China. This herb is an epiphytic orchid and grows on trees or cliffs on the south slopes in broad-leaved evergreen forests, and can reach about 20 cm in height. The many stems are clumping. The white pretty flowers bloom from May to June. Also it has been called "Chousei-ran" and cultivated in Japan since Edo Period (about 300 years ago).
