北アメリカの南西部、オレゴン州からメキシコのバハカリフォルニア州に分布しています。草地や明るい林内の低湿地などに生え、高さは９０センチほどになります。葉は掌状に分裂します。６月から８月ごろ、茎頂に穂状花序をだし、ピンク色や紫色、白色などの花を咲かせます。わが国では、園芸用に「シダルケア（シダルセア）」という名前で本種が販売されています。

アオイ科シダルケア属の多年草で、学名は Sidalcea malviflora。英名は Checkerbloom。

The Checkerbloom (Sidalcea malviflora) belongs to Malvaceae (the Mallow family). It is a perennial herb that is native to southwestern North America; southward from Oregon to Baja California. This herb grows in grasslands or open forest glades and can reach about 90 cm in height. The leaves are divided palmately. The pink, purple or white flowers come in the terminal spikes from June to August. In Japan, this species is sold for horticultural use under the name "Sidalcea".
