熱帯アジアが原産です。現在では、インドやビルマ、インドネシア、パプアニュ−ギニアなどで栽培されています。蔓性で、葉は３出複葉。小葉は菱状卵形で先が尖ります。短日性で、秋に青紫色の花を咲かせます。若い莢や花、葉は野菜として利用され、種子は「だいず」に似た栄養価があります。また肥大した塊根も食用になります。写真は、わが国で育成された品種「ウリズン」。夏でも開花するように改良されたもので、主に沖縄県で栽培されています。潤染（うりずん）とは沖縄の方言で新緑の芽吹きの色のこと。

マメ科シカクマメ属の多年草で、学名は Psophocarpus tetragonolobus。英名は Winged bean。

The Winged bean (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a perennial herb that is native to tropical Asia. Now, it is also cultivated in India, Burma, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. This herb is vine. The leaves are trifoliate with diamond-ovate and acute-tipped leaflets. It is a short-day plant and blooms bluish-purple flowers in fall. The young pods, flowers and leaves are used as a vegetable. The seeds are rich in soybean-like nutrients. The thickening tubers are also edible. The photos are a improved variety "Urizun" which comes into bloom even in summer. "Urizun" is an Okinawan dialect that is the color of fresh green buds.
