わが国の本州、東北地方南部以南から四国・九州それに済州島や台湾、中国に分布しています。山地の林内に生え、高さは２〜５メートルになります。よく分枝して、長楕円形の葉は互生します。枝や葉には香りがあり、「抹香臭い」という言葉の語源になっています。また、全草にアニサチンなどの有毒成分が含まれるため「悪しき実」とされ、名前のいわれになっています。３月から４月ごろ、葉腋に淡黄色の花を咲かせます。果実は集合果で、秋に熟します。

シキミ科シキミ属の常緑小高木で、学名は Illicium religiosum。英名は Japanese anise、Japanese star anise。

The Japanese anise (Illicium religiosum) belongs to the family Illiciaceae. It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is distributed southward from southern Tohoku district of Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu in Janan, the Jeju-do (southern Korea), Taiwan and China. This tree grows in mountane forests and can reach 2-5 m in height. It is much branched, and the leaves are oblong, alternate. The branches and leaves have foul odor. The whole plant contains anisatin and be poisonous. The pale yellow flowers come in axiles from March to April. The fruits are aggregate and ripen in fall.
