モンゴルからロシアのシベリア南部、中国東北部に分布しています。乾燥した高原や草原に生え、高さは50センチほどになります。緑色の茎は直立し、「とくさ」のような稜があります。葉は退化していて、節に小さな鱗片状につきます。春、分枝した茎に黄色い花が咲きます。この植物は、咳止めの効果があるエフェドリンの原料に使われます。 
マオウ科マオウ属の常緑小低木で、学名は Ephedra sinica。英名は Chinese ephedra。 
The Chinese ephedra (Ephedra sinica) belongs to Ephedraceae (the Ephedra family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native Mongolia, southern Siberia in Russia and northeastern China. This shrub grows in arid highlands or grasslands, and it can reach about 50 cm in height. The green stems are erect with Dutch rush-like ridges. The leaves are degenerate and small scalelike on nodes. The yellow flowers bloom at the forked stems in spring. This plant is used as an ingredient of ephedrine which has efficacy for cough medication.
