The Shinano walnut (Juglans regia) belongs to Juglandaceae (the Walnut family). It is a tall decidous tree that is believed to be a natural hybrid between English walnut (Juglans regia) and Walnut (Juglans regia var. orientis). This tree is mainly cultivated in Nagano prefecture and many cultivars have been mainly breeded in Tomi city. It can reach about 20 m in height and the leaves are odd-pinnate compound. The flowers bloom from April and May. The female flowers are erect and the male flowers are drooping. The fruits are nuts and ripen in October. The kernel is large, weighs 12-14 g and has relatively-thin hulls.
