ニュージーランドの固有種で、北島のワイカコ地方から南島のオタゴ地方にかけて分布しています。砂丘や河床、潅木地帯などに生え、高さは6メートルほどになります。鋭い棘状の小枝が対生します。葉は長さ1〜2センチほどの線状倒卵形で、小枝の付け根に束生します。小さな淡い緑白色から白色の花を咲かせます。 
クロウメモドキ科ディスカリア属の常緑低木で、学名は Discaria toumatou。英名は Matagouri。 
The Matagouri (Discaria toumatou) belongs to Rhamnaceae (the Buckthorn family). It is a small evergreen tree that is endemic to New Zealand and is distributed from the Waikako region on the North Island to the Otago region on the South Island. It grows in dunes, riverbeds and shrublands, and is about 6 m high. Sharp spiny twigs are opposite. The leaves are linear obovate with a length of 1 to 2 cm and are bundled at the base of the twigs. It blooms small pale greenish white to white flowers.
