わが国の本州から四国・九州それに朝鮮半島や中国に分布しています。日当たりの良い山地の道ばたや草原に生え、高さは30〜80センチになります。上部でよく分枝し、長楕円状披針形の葉が互生します。6月から7月ごろ、小さな壺形の杯状花序に黄色い花を咲かせます。茎や葉を折ると白い乳液がでて被れることもあり、有毒です。名前は、草のかたちをむかしの灯台(灯明台)に喩えたもの。
トウダイグサ科トウダイグサ属の多年草で、学名は Euphorbia pekinensis。英名は Da ji、Taka-todai。
"Da ji" (Euphorbia pekinensis) belongs to Euphorbiaceae (the Spurge family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed to Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu of Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula and China. This herb grows in sunny montane roadsides and grasslands, and can reach 30-80 cm in height. It is much branched at the upper part of stem and the oblong-lanceolate leaves are alternate. The small bell-shaped cyathia are borne and blooms yellow flowers from June to July. The poisonous white sap ooze when breaked a stem and leaf cause a skin irritation.
