 中国の中西部に分布しています。一科一属一種です。高さは２０メ
ートルほどになり、樹皮は黒褐色で滑らかです。葉は楕円形で先が
尖り、互生します。葉や若枝、樹皮などを折るとゴム質の白い糸を引
きます。５月から７月ごろ、葉腋に花をつけます。果実は堅果で周囲
に翼があり、１０月から１１月ごろ熟します。樹皮は強壮剤や鎮痛薬
として利用されます。
トチュウ科トチュウ属の落葉高木で、学名は Eucommia ulmoildes。
英名は Hardy rubber tree。
Hardy rubber tree (Eucommia ulmoildes) belongs to the Eucommiaceae. It
is a tall deciduous tree that is native to central-western China. It is the only
species in the family Eucommiaceae and the genus Eucommia. This tree can
reach about 20 m in height, and the barks are blackish-brown and smooth.
The leaves are elliptic and arranged alternately with acute tips. If a leaf,
young branch or bark is broken, the white strands of latex exude from the
cross-section surfaces. The flowers bloom at the axils from May to July.
The fruits are winged nuts and ripen in October to November. The barks
are usesd as a tonic medicine or an analgesic agent.
