マレーシアからインドネシアが原産です。高さは３〜４メートルほどになり、葉は細長くて「しょうが」に似ています。杖のような花茎を伸ばして球状花序をつけ、赤色からピンク色の苞が目立つ花を咲かせます。観賞用のほか、若い花序は香味野菜、果実は生食に、種子は香辛料に利用されます。別名で「カンタン」とも呼ばれます。写真の上・中１〜３は園芸品種の「ピンクトーチ（cv. Pink Torch）」。中８・中９は「アルバ（cv. Alba）」。 |

ショウガ科ニコライア属の常緑多年草で、学名は Nicolaia elatior。英名は Torch ginger。 |

The Torch ginger (Nicolaia elatior) belongs to Zingerberaceae (the Ginger family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to Malaysia and Indonesia. This herb can reach 3-4 m in height. Leaves are elongate and resemble the ginger in shape. Spherical inflorescences with showy red to pink bracts are seen on the cane-like stems. Torch ginger is not apply only to ornamental, its young inflorescences are used as spicy herb, fruits are eaten raw and seeds are used as spice. |
