地中海沿岸や西インド諸島のバルバドス島が原産です。高さは８０〜１００センチ、葉は狭披針形で、ロゼット状に叢生します。葉縁には鋭い棘状の鋸歯があります。薬用アロエとして有名で、古くから「医者いらず」とも言われてきました。また透明な葉肉は苦みがないため、生食用にも利用されています。別名で「バルバドスアロエ」とも呼ばれます。

ユリ科アロエ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Aloe vera。英名は Aloe vera、Barbados aloe。

Aloe vera belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is an evergreen herb that is native to the coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea and the Caribbean; the Barbados Island. This herb can reach 80-100 cm in height. The leaves are narrow lanceolate and arranged in rosette, with acute spiny toothed edges. The leaf-freshes are transparent and have not biiter taste, and used as a medicine and raw diet.
