The "Amami-charumeru-so" (Mitella amamiana) belongs to Saxifragaceae (the Saxifrage family). It is a perennial herb that is endemic to Amami Oshima in Japan's Amami Islands. It was discovered in 2011 by Shuichi Morita, a biological researcher residing on Amami Oshima. It grows in shaded, damp areas along mountain valleys and reaches a height of about 8 cm. The leaf blade is heart-shaped, with an irregular, shallowly lobed margin divided into about five lobes, and the surface is sparsely hairy. From around February to March, it extends slender flower stalks and produces small, pale pink or white flowers. The corolla features green filaments and yellow anthers. It is classified as Critically Endangered (CR) on the Ministry of the Environment's Red List.
