北アメリカが原産です。広く植栽されているため、もっともよく見ることのできる野生の「すもも（李）」です。高さは３〜６メートルほどになります。葉は長楕円形で、葉縁には揃った重鋸歯があり、互生します。４月に葉の展開とともに白い花を咲かせます。蕾のときは赤みを帯びます。果実は、夏の終わりに熟しますが、ジャムやシロップ漬けに利用されてきました。

バラ科サクラ属の落葉低木で、学名は Prunus americana。英名は American plum。

The American plum (Prunus americana) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native to North America. Because it is widely planted, it is a wild plum that can be seen most often. The height will be about 3-6 m. The leaves are oblong in shape, with an uniform double-serrate margin, which are alternate. The white flowers bloom with the development of leaves in April. The buds are reddish. The fruit ripens in late summer, and has been used for jam and syrup pickling.
