南アメリカが原産です。わが国へは昭和時代の中頃に渡来しました。現在では、本州の関東地方以西に広く帰化しています。茎は直立して、よく分枝し、高さは２メートルほどになります。茎葉は広線形で対生し、半分より上部に鋭い鋸歯があります。夏から秋にかけて、茎頂や葉腋に穂状花序をだし、小さな淡青紫色の花を咲かせます。「やなぎはながさ」に比べて、花筒部が短いことが特徴です。

クマツヅラ科クマツヅラ属の多年草で、学名は Verbena brasiliensis。英名は Brazilian vervain。

Brazilian verbain (Verbena brasiliensis) belongs to Verbenaceae (the Verbena family). It is a perennial herb that is native to South America. This herb was introduced into Japan in the middle days of Showa Era (about 40 years ago), and nowadays it is naturalized widely westward from Kanto-district of Honshu. The stem is erect, much branched and can reach about 2 m in height. The cauline leaves are broad linear, opposite and have acute toothed edges at upper-half of leaf blades. The spikes are borne on the stem apices or axiles and bloom small pale bluish-purple flowers. It is defined by shorter corolla tubes than Purpletop verbena.
