アメリカ東部のほとんどのところに分布しています。ふつう森林地帯の縁に生え、高さは45〜90センチになります。葉は長楕円状卵形から長楕円状倒卵形、縁は滑らかで対生します。5月から7月ごろ、ドーム状からほとんど球状の散形花序に、小さな白色の花を咲かせます。個々の白くて蝋質の花の中心は、赤色がかったり、紫色やピンク色になります。
ガガイモ科トウワタ属の多年草で、学名は Asclepias variegata。英名は Redring milkweed、White milkweed。
The Redring milkweed (Asclepias variegata) belongs to Asclepiadaceae (the Milkweed family). It is a perennial herb that is native to much of the eastern half of the United States. This herb grows usually in margins of wooded areas, and it can reach 45-90 cm in height. The leaves are oblong-ovate to oblong-obovate in shape, smooth along their margins, and arranged in opposite. The small white flowers bloom in the dome-shaped to nearly globoid umbels from May to July. Each white waxy flower has a reddish to purple or pink center.
