ヨーロッパの中部から南部、それに北アフリカに分布しています。山地のやぶや荒れ地に生え、高さは１０〜２５センチになります。葉は長さ４〜８ミリの針状で、４個が輪生します。早春から夏にかけて、総状花序に花を咲かせます。花冠は円筒状で５〜６ミリあり、濃い紅色またはまれに白色です。写真中２・中３は、園芸品種の「ビレリー（cv. Virellii）」。

ツツジ科エリカ属の常緑小低木で、学名は Erica carnea (syn. Erica herbacea)。英名は Winter heath、Winter flowering heather。

The Winter heath (Erica carnea) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native to central and southern Europe and North Africa. This shrub grows in mountane thickets and heaths and can reach 10-25 cm in height. The leaves are needle-like 4-8 mm long in whorls of four. The flowers bloom in racemes in early spring to summer. The corolla is cylindrical, 5-6 mm long, dark reddish-pink and rarely white. The 3rd and 4th photos show the horticultural variety 'Virellii'.
