中国の南西部および中西部が原産です。それは生育が遅く、レモンの香りのする葉と花が特徴のパペダ類の一種です。この樹木は、高さは３〜４．５メートルになり、小さな「マンダリン」のような果実を作ります。葉は広い葉柄が特徴で、外観は「ゆず（柚）」や「こぶみかん (瘤蜜柑)」の葉に似ています。果物には、多くの大きな種子と少量の苦いまたは酸っぱいジュースが含まれ、食用には適しません。名前は、湖北省にある宜昌市に因みます。「ゆず」は「イーチャンチー」を一方の親にもつ雑種だといわれています。別名で「イーチャンパペダ（宜昌橙）」とも呼ばれます。

ミカン科ミカン属の常緑低木で、学名は Citrus ichangensis (syn. Citrus cavaleriei)。英名は Ichang papeda。

The Ichang papeda (Citrus ichangensis) belongs to Rutaceae (the Citrus family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to southwestern and west-central China. It is a slow-growing species of papeda that has characteristic lemon-scented foliage and flowers. This tree grows to 3-4.5 m, and produces a small, mandarin-like fruit. The leaves feature a broad petiole, and resemble the leaves of the yuzu (Citrus junos) and the kaffir lime (Citrus hystrix) in appearance. The fruit contains many large seeds and a small quantity of bitter or sour juice and is not edible. The common name is named for the city of Yichang, in China's Hubei province. Yuzu is said to be a hybrid with Echanchi as one parent.
