The Gray field speedwell (Veronica polita var. lilacina) belongs to Scrophulariaceae (the Figwort family). It is a biennial herb that is distributed from the Chubu region of Honshu westward to Shikoku, Kyushu, and the Nansei Islands in Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula, China, and the western Himalayas. It grows on roadsides and stone walls, and is 10-25 cm tall. The stem is branched and spreads horizontally with the tip obliquely upturned. The leaves are small and ovate with serrated edges and white hairs. The corolla is pale reddish purple with four lobes. The fruit is a slightly flattened, round capsule with white hairs on the surface. In Chinese, it is called "婆婆納" (po po na).
