	西アジアが原産です。紀元前２世紀ごろには、すでに栽培されていました。わが国へは江戸時代の初めに中国から渡来しました。高さは６メートルくらいになり、掌状に３～５裂した葉が互生します。５月から９月ごろ、倒卵球形の隠頭花序をつけます。これが熟すと暗い紅紫色になり、食用にします。和名は、果実が１か月で熟すことから、あるいは１日に１果ずつ熟すことから一熟（いちじゅく）で、その転訛といわれています。
	クワ科イチジク属の落葉小高木で、学名は Ficus carica。英名は Fig。
	The Fig (Ficus carica) belongs to Moraceae (the Mulberry family). It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is native to West Asia. This tree has been cultivated from four century Before Christ. It was introduced into Japan via China in early Edo Era (about 350 years ago). It can reach about 6 m in height. The leaves are alternate and 3-5 deeply lobed palmately. The hypanthodium is obovate and appears from May to September. It ripens in dark magenta and used as a food. The Japanese name is said to be a corruption of "Ichi-juku", from the fact that the fruit ripens in one month or one fruit ripens in one day.
