わが国の本州から四国・九州、それに世界の熱帯から暖帯地域に広く分布しています。道端や荒れ地に生え、高さは30〜50センチになります。茎は扁平で、根元から株立ちします。踏みつけがあるときは斜上します。線形の葉は強靱で、縁には軟らかい毛が生えます。8月から9月ごろ、茎頂に傘形の花序をだし、片側に規則正しく2列に並ぶ小穂をつけます。台湾華語では「牛筋草」、中国語では「牛筋草(niu jin cao)」と呼ばれます。C4植物(C4型光合成を行う植物)です。
イネ科オヒシバ属の一年草で、学名は Eleusine indica。英名は Wire grass。
The Wire grass (Eleusine indica) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is an annual herb that is widely distributed from Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan, as well as in tropical and warm temperate regions of the world. It grows on roadsides and wastelands, and grows 30-50 cm tall. The stems are flattened and bushy from the base. It grows obliquely when trampled. From August to September, it produces an inflorescence in the shape of an umbrella at the top of the stem, with spikelets regularly arranged in two rows on one side. It is called "牛筋草" in Taiwanese Chinese and "牛筋草" (niu jin cao) in Chinese. It is a C4 plant (Plants with C4-type photosynthesis).
