The "Ooba-giboushi" (Hosta montana) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Japan. This herb grows in montane wettish forest edges or grasslands and can reach 60-100 cm in height. The leaves are ovate-elliptic and basal with long petioles. The pale purple to white flowers bloom on the long flowering stalks from June to August. When the buds are clustered, only the bracts open to reveal a star shape. The young shoots are tender and are one of the wild vegetables called "urui" in the Tohoku region. It is also known as "yama-kanpyo" (mountain kanpyo), and is dried and used as a preserved food.
