わが国の本州、近畿地方以北から東北地方に分布しています。山地の湿地などにまれに生え、高さは１００センチほどになります。茎は分枝しないで直立し、疎らに粗い毛が生えます。葉は三角状で、羽状に中〜深裂します。９月から１１月ごろ、茎頂の円錐状花序に、黄色い頭花を横向きから下向きに咲かせます。頭花は直径３．５〜４センチで、約３０個の舌状花があります。果実は痩果で長さ７〜９ミリ、やや扁平な線形です。

キク科フクオウソウ属の多年草で、学名は Prenanthes tanakae。英名はありません。

"Oo-nigana" (Prenanthes tanakae) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Kinki district north to Tohoku district of Honshu. This herb grows in wetlands in the mountains, and the height is about 100 cm. The stem is upright without branching and sparsely grows coarse hair. The leaves are deltoid and divided into cleft to deep segments pinnately. The yellow flower heads bloom sideways-facing to descending on the apical panicles, from September to November. The fruits are capsule, 7-9 mm long, and have a rather flat linear shape.
