わが国の本州、神奈川県と静岡県に分布しています。山地の林内に生え、高さは１０センチほどになります。葉は腎円形で、葉柄や葉裏は暗紫色を帯びます。６月から８月ごろ、暗紫色から緑色の小さな花を咲かせます。萼筒は丸みを帯びた円筒形で、萼裂片は三角形卵形です。和名の由来は、箱根の乙女峠で発見されたことによります。

ウマノスズクサ科カンアオイ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Heterotropa savatieri (syn. Asarum savatieri)。英名はありません。

"Otome-aoi" (Heterotropa savatieri) belongs to Aristolochiaceae (the Birthwort family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed to Kanagawa and Shizuoka perefecture of Honshu. This herb grows in mountain forests and can reach about 10 cm in height. The leaves are reniform-round, the abaxial sides and petioles are tinged dark purple. The dark purple to green, small flowers bloom from June to August. The calyx tube is round-tubular and the calyx lobes are deltoid-ovate. The Japanese name is derived from the findspot, the Otome Pass in Hakone volcano.
