メキシコが原産です。わが国へは大正時代に渡来しました。高さは１０〜３０センチほどになります。「クローバー」似た葉が４個で、基部に紫色の斑があります。このため「ラッキークローバー」と呼ばれることもあります。７月から１１月ごろ、赤桃色の花を咲かせます。葉や花には「レモン」に似た酸味があり、サラダの付け合わせに利用されるそうです。蓚酸が含まれるため、少量に限るとありますが。

The Iron cross plant (Oxalis deppei) belongs to Oxalidaceae (the Wood sorrel family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Mexico. It was introduced to Japan in the Taisho era (1912-1926). It grows 10 to 30 cm tall. It has four clover-like leaves with purple spots at the base. It produces reddish-pink flowers from July to November. The leaves and flowers have a sour taste similar to that of "lemon" and are used to add to salads. It is only used in small quantities, though, because of the oxalic acid content.
