わが国の本州、宮城・石川県以西から四国、九州に分布しています。明るい林床などに生え、高さは１メートルくらいになります。７月から８月ごろ、花茎を伸ばして先端に、淡い黄緑色の花を咲かせます。花が咲くころに、葉が枯れていることから、葉（歯）がないとの語呂あわせで名前がついたそうです。発芽してから６〜８年目になって開花しますが、その後は枯死してしまいます。柔らかい若い芽や鱗茎は食用にされます。

ユリ科ウバユリ属の多年草で、学名は Cardiocrinum cordatum。英名はありません。

The "Uba-yuri" (Cardiocrinum cordatum) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in Japan, from Miyagi-Ishikawa Prefecture in Honshu west to Shikoku and Kyushu. It grows on bright forest floors and up to a height of about 1 m. The pale yellowish green flowers bloom atop of flowering stalks from July to August. It is said that the plant was given this name because, by the time the flowers bloom, the leaves have withered-a play on words suggesting that the plant has "no teeth" (since "ha" can also mean "leaves"). It blooms 6-8 years after germination, but it will die after flowering. Soft young sprouts and bulbs are edible.
