The "Ukon-zakura" (Prunus lannesiana cv. Grandiflora) belongs to the Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is a cultivar of the "Sato-zakura" (Prunus lannesiana), which has been recorded in Japan since the middle of the Edo period (1603-1868), it produces double-petaled flowers about 4 cm in diameter around the middle of April. The color of the open petals is a pale yellowish green, similar to the color of ukon dye made from the root of the "ukon" plant. Depending on the individual, greenish areas can be seen on the petals. The buds, however, are light red.
