It is an evergreen perennial herb that is endemic to Japan and is distributed on the Pacific Ocean side of Honshu from the Kanto region to the Tokai region and the Kii Peninsula. It grows on cliffs in mountainous areas. The culm is thin and 40 to 70 cm tall. From August to October, it produces 5-15 cm long panicles with small yellow-green spikelets.
