わが国の本州、中部地方以北から北海道、それに朝鮮半島や北太平洋地域に分布する「はくさんちどり」の一品種だす。山地帯から高山帯の湿原に生え、高さは10〜40センチになります。葉は広線形で互生します。6月から8月ごろ、総状花序をだして花を咲かせます。葉と苞葉に暗紫色の斑点があるのが特徴です。和名は「うずらの卵」のような模様の葉に因みます。 
ラン科ハクサンチドリ属の多年草で、学名は Orchis aristata f. punctata。英名はありません。 
"Uzuraba-hakusan-chidori" (Orchis aristata f. punctata) belongs to Orchidaceae (the Orchid family). It is a perennial herb that is a form of "Hakusan-chidori" distributed from the Chubu region of Honshu and northward to Hokkaido in Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula and the North Pacific region. It grows in marshes in the mountainous to alpine zones and is 10 to 40 cm tall. The leaves are broadly linear and alternate, and it produces flowers in racemes from June to August. The leaves and bracts are characterized by dark purple spots. Its Japanese name is derived from the quail egg-like pattern of its leaves.
