ヨーロッパ南部の地中海沿岸が原産です。日当たりの良い石灰岩質の砂礫地などに生え、高さは30センチほどになります。「オーク」に似た小さな葉には光沢があります。7月から9月ごろ、芳香のあるローズピンク色の花を咲かせます。古くから痛風の治療薬や利尿剤、咳や喘息の薬として用いられてきました。 
シソ科ニガクサ属の常緑小低木で、学名は Teucrium chamaedrys。英名は Wall germander。 
The wall germander (Teucrium chamaedrys) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is an evergreen subshrub that is native to southern Europe, coastal areas of the Mediterranean. This herb grows in sunny calcareous screes and can reach about 30 cm in height. The leaves are small, glossy and resemble to the oak leaf. The fragrant rose-pink flowers come in July through September. This herb has been used for gout suppressant, hydragogue or cough medication.
