カナダの西部・中部からアメリカの西部・西中部に分布しています。草原や牧草地などに生え、高さは２０〜６０センチになります。茎は直立して、よく分枝します。葉は披針形から長楕円形で先端がとがり、疎らに毛が生えます。７月から９月ごろ、枝先に紫色から白色の頭花を咲かせます。果実は痩果で、冠毛があります。

キク科シンフィオトリクム属の多年草で、学名は Symphyotrichum ascendens (syn. Aster ascendens)。英名は Western aster、Long-leaved aster。

The Western aster (Symphyotrichum ascendens) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from western and central Canada to western and west-central United States. It grows in grasslands and pastures and is 20-60 cm tall. The stem is erect and well branched. The leaves are lanceolate to elliptic, pointed at the tip, and sparsely hairy. It produces purple to white flower heads at the tips of its branches from July to September. The fruit is achene with a pappus.
