インドおよび東南アジア、オーストラリアの北部に分布しています。広い樹冠を形成し、自生地では１５〜２０メートルの高さになります。幼木のころは半日陰に育ち、着生しますが、成長すると宿主を覆い隠してしまいます。枝がよく分枝して、垂れ下がるのが特徴です。和名では「しだれがじゅまる」、別名で「ベンジャミンゴムのき」とも呼ばれます。
写真中２と中６・下は、斑入りの園芸品種「スターライト（cv. Star Light）」。
中６・下では「枝変わり」（植物の一部が、通常の個体と異なる性質を持つようになる突然変異の現象）を見ることができます。

クワ科イチジク属の常緑高木で、学名は Ficus benjamina。英名は Benjamin tree、Weeping fig。

The Benjamin tree (Ficus benjamina) belongs to Moraceae (the Mulberry family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is found in India and Southeast Asia and northern Australia. It forms a broad canopy, reaching 15 to 20 m tall in its native habitat. As a young tree, it grows in semi-shade and is epiphytic, but as it grows it overshadows its host. It is characterized by its well branched and drooping branches. It is also called "Shidare-gajumaru" and "Benjamin gum tree" in Japan. The 3rd, 7th and bottom photos show the spotted garden variety 'Star Light'. In the 7th and bottle parts, you can see "bud variation" (a phenomenon in which part of a plant mutates and takes on characteristics different from those of normal individuals).
