メギ科メギ属の常緑低木で、学名は Berberis darwinii。英名は Darwin's barberry。
The Darwin's barberry (Berberis darwinii) belongs to Berberidaceae (the Barberry family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to southern Chile and Argentina. It was discovered in South America in 1835 by Charles Darwin during the voyage of the 'Beagle'. It is also naturalized elsewhere. This tree is thorny, much branched from ground level, and can reach 3-4 m in height. The leaves are ovate with a spiny margin. The orange flowers bloom in dense racemes in spring. The fruits are small purple-black berries and ripening in summer. They are edible but very acidic.
