Andropogon gerardii

The big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a perennial herb that is native to central and eastern North America. It was the dominant grass of the tallgrass prairie which once covered large parts of the Midwest. This herb grows in grasslands and up to a height of 1-3 m. The stem base turns blue or purple as it matures. The leaves are flattened linear, up to 60 cm long and 1 cm wide, emerge gray to blue green in spring, mature to green with red tinges in summer and turn reddish bronze with lavender tones in fall after frost. The flowering stems rise in late summer, and bearing purplish 3-parted, finger-like flower clusters purportedly resembling turkey feet. This herb is good forage for horses and cattle and can also be cut and used for hay.
