インドネシアのモルッカ諸島が原産です。現在では熱帯地域の各地で植栽されています。高さは9〜18メートルになります。葉は奇数羽状複葉で、長楕円形の小葉が11〜37個ほどつきます。幹や古い枝から円錐花序をだし、暗赤色の花を咲かせます。果実は円筒状で、果肉は酸味が強く、カレーやピクルスに利用されます。和名では「ながばのごれんし(長葉の五斂子)」と呼ばれます。 
カタバミ科ゴレンシ属の常緑高木で、学名は Averrhoa bilimbi。英名は Bilimbi、Cucumber tree、Tree sorrel。 
The bilimbi (Averrhoa bilimbi) belongs to Oxalidaceae (the Wood sorrel family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to the Moluccas in Indonesia. Nowadays, it is cultivated widely in the tropical areas. This tree can reach 9-18 m in height. The leaves are odd-pinnate with 11-37 oblong leaflets. The panicles are borne on the trunks and old branches, and bloom dark red flowers. The fruits are cylindrical with strong acid tasted fleshs, and used for a spice in curries or a pickled.
