ヨーロッパ中部の地中海沿岸が原産です。今では欧米諸国に帰化しています。高さは３０〜６０センチくらいになり、淡い緑色の葉や茎は白い毛で被われています。夏に青い星形の花を咲かせます。若葉はハーブティーやサラダに、花は砂糖漬けなどに利用されます。和名では「るりじさ（瑠璃苣）」と呼ばれますが、「コンフリー（Symphytum officinale）」の近縁種です。

The borage (Borago officinalis) belongs to Boraginaceae (the Borage family). It is an annual herb that is native to central Europe; coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea. It is naturalized in Europe and the United States nowadays. This herb can reach 30-60 cm in height, the pale green leaves and stems are covered with white hairs. The blue star-shaped flowers come in summer. The young leaves are used for herbal tea or salad and the flowers are used for confiture. It is a related species of the comfrey (Symphytum officinale).
