ホンジュラスからベネズエラとペルーに分布しています。主に湿潤熱帯バイオームに生え、高さは１０〜１５メートルになります。幹は丸くて細く、樹皮は滑らかで、淡い灰色から茶色です。葉は偶数羽状複葉で、楕円形から円形の小葉が４〜９対つきます。葉の縁は波状をしています。枝先に円錐花序をだし、苞に包まれた橙赤色から赤色の花を咲かせます。雄しべは花冠から突き出します。果実は平らな莢果で、長さ２０〜３０センチになり、裂開します。属名は、アイルランドの植物学者・医師であったパトリック・ブラウンに因みます。

The Rose of Venezuela (Brownea ariza) belongs to the family Caesalpiniaceae. This is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is distributed from Honduras to Venezuela and Peru. It primarily grows in humid tropical biomes and reaches a height of 10-15 m. The trunk is round and slender, with smooth bark ranging in color from light gray to brown. The leaves are pari-pinnate compoud with 4 to 9 pairs of elliptic to circular leaflets. The edges of the leaves are wavy. Panicles form at the tips of the branches, producing orange-red to red flowers enclosed in bracts. The stamens protrude from the corolla. The fruit is a flat pod, 20 to 30 cm long, which splits open. The genus name is derived from Patrick Browne (1720-1790), an Irish botanist and physician.
