北アメリカが原産です。わが国へは明治時代に渡来し、昭和時代になってから全国に広がりました。おもに関東地方以西の荒れ地や道ばたなどに生え、高さは３０〜１５０センチになります。この花粉は、「おおぶたくさ」とともに花粉症の原因として有名です。「よもぎ」に似た葉は羽状に深裂し、下部では対生、上部で互生します。８月から９月ごろ、花序をだして上部に雄頭花、下部に雌頭花を咲かせます。

キク科ブタクサ属の多年草で、学名は Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. elatior。英名は Ragweed。

The Ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. elatior) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that native to North America. It was introduced into Japan in the days of Meiji Era and spreaded across of coutry in Showa Era (about 60 years ago). This herb grows in roadsides and barrens and can reach 30-150 cm in height. The leaves are deep pinnately, resembles the Mugwort in appearance, and opposite at the underpart of stems and alternate at the upperpart. The flowering clusters bear on the stems from August to September. They bloom male flowerheads at the upperpart and female flowerheads at the underpart. The pollen of this flowers are famous as an allergen of hay fever as well as the Giant ragweed.
