アメリカの東部および南部に分布しています。中湿性の森それにふつう石灰岩質の森に生え、高さは１５〜２５メートルになります。樹皮は淡灰色で、厚くて不規則に丸まった畝があります。葉は対生し、掌状に分裂、葉脈があります。縁は全縁か幾分丸く３〜５裂します。葉は緑色で裏面は比較的淡く、微毛があります。秋にはオレンジ色や黄色に黄葉します。花は黄緑色の散房花序につき、びどく小さくて、早春の葉の展開前または同時に咲きます。果実は、長さ１．５〜３センチの一対の翼果です。

カエデ科カエデ属の落葉高木で、学名は Acer floridanum (syn. Acer saccharum ssp. floridanum)。英名は Florida maple。

The Florida maple (Acer floridanum) beolngs to Aceraceae (the Maple family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is distributed to the eastern and southern United States. This tree grows in mesic and usually calcareous woodlands, and up to a height of 15-25 m. The bark is a light gray with thick irregular curling ridges. The leaves are opposite, palmately lobed and veined, with an entire margin and three or five somewhat rounded lobes. They are green above and paler and pubescent below. In fall they turn orange and yellow. The flowers appear on yellow-green corymbs and are quite small before or with the leaves in early spring. The fruit is a paired samara 1.5-3 cm long.
