南アフリカのケープ地方が原産です。高さは１０〜２０センチほどになり、葉は３出複葉で小葉は円形から倒卵形です。冬から春にかけて、直径３センチほどの花を咲かせます。「はなかたばみ」よりは、株が小さめです。わが国では本州、関東地方以西では露地で越冬します。

カタバミ科カタバミ属の多年草で、学名は Oxalis variabilis（syn. Oxalis purpurea）。英名は Grand duchess oxalis。

The grand duchess oxalis belongs to Oxalidaceae (the Wood sorrel family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the Cape Province of South Africa. This herb can reach 10-20 cm in height, and the leaves are 3-lobed compounds with round to obovate leaflets. The flowers are 3 cm in diameter and bear from winter to spring. The plant size is smaller than Oxalis bowiei. This herb can pass the winter outdoors in temperature region westward from Kanto district of Japan.
