The wood horsetail (Equisetum sylvaticum) belongs to Equisetaceae (the Horsetail family). It is a fern that is native the Northern Hemisphere. This fern grows in wet or swampy forests, open woodlands, and meadow areas, and it can reach 30-60 cm in height. The stems are erect and hollow. They have 10-18 spiny vertical ridges that contain silica spicules. The generally 12 or more branches are arranged in whorls and drooping downward. The fertile stems are shorter than the others; on these develop the cones that bear the spore casings.
